มาตรฐานของ Wireless LAN มีอยู่ด้วยกันหลายตัวมากดังนี้
802.11a - Wireless network bearer operating in 5 GHz
ISM band with data rate up to 54 Mbps
802.11b - Wireless network bearer operating in the 2.4 GHz
ISM band with data rates up to 11 Mbps
802.11e - Quality of service and prioritisation
802.11f - Handover
802.11g - Wireless network bearer operating in 2.4 GHz
ISM band with data rates up to 54 Mbps
802.11h - Power control
802.11i - Authentication and encryption
802.11j - Interworking
802.11k - Measurement reporting

ทั้งนี้ความถี่ทั้งหมดที่ใช้ในมาตรฐาน 802.11 นั้นจะเรียกว่าเป็นความถี่ ISM band ย่อมาจาก Industrial Scientific and Medical คือเป็นความถี่สาธารณะที่ไม่ต้องขออนุญาต มาตรฐานที่เกี่ยวกับ bearers จะมีอยู่ 4 ตัวหลักๆด้วยกันคือ a,b,g และ n ซึ่งเป็นตัวล่าสุดโดยมีลำดับของการ approve เป็นมาตรฐานดังนี้
802.11b : July 1999
ความถี่ 2.4GHz Channel Width 20MHz ใช้ modulation CCK(Complementary Code Keying) หรือ DSSS(Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum) มีความเร็วที่ 11Mbps
802.11a : July 1999
ความถี่ 5GHz Channel Width 20MHz ใช้ modulation OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) มีความเร็วที่ 54Mbps
802.11g : June 2003
ความถี่ 2.4GHz Channel Width 20MHz ใช้ modulation CCK, DSSS หรือ OFDM มีความเร็วที่ 54Mbps
802.11n : คาดว่าน่าจะภายในปี 2007
ความถี่ 2.4GHz หรือ 5GHz Channel Width 20MHz หรือ 40MHz ใช้ modulation CCK, DSSS หรือ OFDM มีความเร็วที่ 540Mbps
โดยมาตรฐาน 802.11n นั้นจะใช้เทคโนโลยีที่เรียกกันว่า MIMO(Multiple Inputs Multiple Outputs) คือจะมี transmitter antenna และ receiver antenna? หลายตัวเพื่อให้มี throughput มากขึ้นเป็นในลักษณะของ Spatial Multiplexing และยังเพิ่ม range จากลักษณะของ Spatial Diversity ด้วย
